AEARU was established in 1996 with the aim of forming a forum for the presidents of leading research universities and carrying out mutual exchanges between the major universities in East Asia. Expectations are that this regional consortium, on the basis of common academic cultural backgrounds among member universities, will contribute not only to the development of higher education and research but also to the opening up of a new era leading to cultural economic and social progress in the region.

Activities

AEARU member universities organize workshops, student summer camps, student sports competitions and international symposia, promoting mutual exchanges of ideas and information and developing close bonds between the member universities. In 2016, Tohoku University hosted the 11th Web Technology and Computer Science Workshop: Computer Science and Data Science.

Experience story by a participant

From Nov 2 to Nov 5, I attended the AEARU Workshop on R&D Policy and Asian Research Universities. This year the topic was “Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth in the Era of Global Inequality”. The experience of attending the workshop and communicating with other top Asian university students left quite an impression on me. I delivered a presentation at the workshop. The KAIST students organized a wonderful Korean-style dinner and we also enjoyed Korean-style karaoke.
In this workshop, I was very impressed by the Korean university’s abilities in research and development, and by their capacity for innovation.
Though presenting to an international audience at the workshop was a challenge for me, I gained in confidence regarding my public speaking.
Through communicating with other foreign students, I was also able to advance my skills in English. In conclusion, if you too would like to
gain some experience in international communication, you must join in such activities!
